Homestay can rejuvenate NTY campaign

Homestay can help generate a new enthusiasm about Nepal Tourism Year2011 campaign in the country, said experts. The slowly-emerging homestay concept can be taken to new heights with the ongoing Nepal Tourism Year, said Prachanda Man Shrestha, CEO of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) at the first national workshop on homestay that began here today.

The concept is going to bring about an economic revolution while generating revenue and giving the rural sector a chance to explore economic independence, he said.

The homestay concept will work not just for foreigners but also for locals looking to enjoy their weekends. Started in 2007, the concept has picked up momentum over the past few years.

Homestay is a form of tourism, where visitors rent a room in a private home and experience daily life with their host's family and community, sharing local life and culture. This benefits the household with additional income as well as enriching the idea of tourism. We need to take the homestay concept forward in a big way. It will encourage national growth and will be extremely beneficial for the development of the tourism sector," said Khadga Bahadur Vishwakarma, Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, at the two-day seminar.

The main aim of homestay is to link village development and sustainable tourism through additional income, employment and markets for agricultural products and handicrafts. Other objectives include the provision of incentives for forestation and nature conservation and the creation of a global family through this interface between rural folks and foreign tourists during homestays, resulting in mutual understanding and learning.
